A cold, a viral illness. You treat the symptoms - mucinex might help as will increasing your daily water intake, no smoking. When everything else has failed, then you go see your doctor.

Chest congestion is not a symptom of any one single condition. Unfortunately, you haven't described any other symptoms besides congestion. If I could listen to your lungs, I could tell you more. So do you really want speculation??? You still wouldn't know where you stand. I agree that you can try a mucolytic like Mucinex to help break up your congestion. Try increasing your water intake to 2-3 liters a day but your congestion worsens as a result of this, cut back immediately. You could have wet lungs & wouldn't need more fluids but like I said, I can't hear your breath sounds. Another thing you can try is a cold mist vaporizer. Give all this another week if you feel no improvement, speak to your doctor about it.
