Does anyone know the going rate for an at-home medical transcriptionist? I understand that some are paid per hour and some per line of transcription–what would the rate be for each?

It differs depending on where you work, but I live in Michigan and do transcription for a large hospital…from my home. I make an hourly wage PLUS incentive pay for lines typed over the minimum daily requirement (1100/day). 7 cents a line for anything between 1100 to 1350 lines; 8 cents a line between 1350 and 1500 lines; 9 cents a line between 1500 and 1750 lines and 10 cents a line for anything over 1750 lines. I can make anywhere between 650 and 1,000 dollars a month in incentive pay. It differs every day because some days I just seem to get more difficult reports/dictators, and it slows me down.

EDIT: We have numerous adquate firewalls and encryption software, as well as password protection in order to comply with HIPAA regulations. The documents are no more exposed to privacy violations than they would be if typed ‘in-house’. In fact, the information is safer because NO ONE has access to my computer but ME…and all of my keystrokes are monitored to make sure that the documents I’m accessing are the ones I’m actually transcribing and not just ‘browsing’ irrelevant information.

With today’s technology, there is virtually no paper trail anymore. Almost everything is stored digitally because there’s just no room to adequately warehouse paper copies.

Pass It On’s response is appropriate. However, the following may explain why there are almost no at-home medical transcriptionist work out there in the U.S.

The major bulk of medical transcription work in the U.S. has been greatly curtailed by state privacy laws as it pertains to medical records and patient confidentiality. The vast majority of medical records are kept in recordkeeping departments within medical centers and any transcription work is done "in-house," not "outsourced."

    Good luck!
