I have been sick for some time. The doctor has ruled out all the small "fixable" things. He is left with having a few small tests done to confirm that it is MS (multiple sclerosis), a chronic disease with no cure. How do you cope with something like this while you are just waiting to find out what it is?
You simply hope it’s nothing drastic and you just wait. No use in panicking about "what if". If the worse is eventually diagnosed then you join a support group or see a therapist.
For a start, you deal with things as they happen. You do not have a diagnosis of anything. No one doctor can rule out all "the small fixable things" to begin with. The tests for MS are small? This story keeps getting more amazing by the minute!
You need to seek out a good Counselor. Ask your Doctor to refer one to you. Do know, that sometimes, it takes a few visits AND sometimes it takes a few different Counselors before you feel comfortable… a good match, so to speak. You must feel safe & comfortable with the individual you work with so that the stress of this situation can be lifted from your shoulders! There are also many very good support groups available, often through the Hospital your Doctor is affiliated with… Good lucck to you & many Blessings!
I am interpreting your question differently from how others have – not sure if I’m right though. To me, I hear you asking not just about worrying that you have MS but how you deal with having a chronic "mystery" illness. If that is what you’re asking, then read on. If not, then you’ve got other answers that address the MS fear issue.
As for how to cope with a chronic "mystery" illness, you find and/or create good support systems. You talk openly with your partner and family about expectations and needs, theirs and yours. You find a therapist or a support group (I prefer the former) dealing with chronically ill patients. You plan out activities and tasks carefully to conserve energy and other physical resources. You may need to get accommodations at work. You may need to consider changing jobs to have something with lower stress (physical or emotional – I did). You live day to day and you try to get by and you remind yourself that living with some hope is better than giving up. Who the hell knows how bad death would be? Could be worse than this, so better to live and keep pushing.
Educate yourself about it and learn how to control your symptoms. Try to meet with some people who had MS for some longer time, maybe you will learn from their experience. There are many things which you can do to ease your symptoms, check this out:
