I think it’s very complicated. Remember, it’s one of the few things we actually have control with – we decide what to put into our mouths, no one else does it for us. I believe food serves a purpose for obese people, and I don’t judge them. I think it’s a coping mechanism, and for some it’s very comforting initially, and then they feel guilty for eating, and their self esteem gets lower. Some people eat out of boredom too. It takes willpower and a good substitute for whatever triggers them to overeat, and then to switch to a different and healthier coping style. Some people do have thyroid problems effecting their weight as well.

I’m overweight and i would say genetics and the fact that I like to eat what I want to eat not what I should always eat are the cause. I am not emotionally traumatized or depressed. In fact I am probably a lot more sound than some of my skinny friends. Its not that I don’t know what it would take for me to be skinny. Lord knows I have yo-yo’d enough to know what it takes but I like food and have little interest in eating carrots everyday so that I can change my body image to meat what society thinks it should be. Sorry it sounds like you need to meet a beautiful happy fat person we exist.

Definitely depression and anxiety play a part. When dealing with these issues it’s hard to focus on diet and exercise. You just want to make it through each day.
