Foot pain is a common problem which afflicts approximately 75 percent of Americans at some point within their lifetimes. A high percentage of these individuals, moreover, suffer from constant or reoccurring pain that inhibits their activities. However, according to experts, it is not necessary to suffer with chronic foot pain. If you understand what causes this condition you will have the tools needed to successfully treat it.

What Causes Foot Pain?

Though small, the feet serve multiple physiological functions. They support the weight of the body, stabilize the balance, and absorb the pressure (or shock) of walking. They also prompt the movement of the legs. These essential functions place enormous stress on the feet.

According to the Chronic Pain Connection, the pressure of walking, alone, “is about 50% greater than the person’s body weight. [Moreover] during a typical day, people spend about 4 hours on their feet and take 8,000 to 10,000 steps. This means that the feet support a combined force equivalent to several hundred tons every day.”

It’s little wonder, then, that foot pain is such a common condition. But certain bodily functions and lifestyle factors can greatly influence the risk of developing chronic pain. These factors include:

  • Shoes. Poorly fitting shoes are a common cause of foot pain, say experts. Moreover, women who wear high heels are at a greater risk of developing this condition.
  • Temperature. The feet can change shape or size by as much as 5 percent due to weather conditions. Higher temperatures tend to make the feet swell, while cooler temperatures shrink the tissues.
  • Exercising. Many different foot conditions, and consequent pain, are related to high-impact exercising such as that involved in aerobics or running. Some of the exercise-induced foot conditions/pains include calluses, muscle cramps, twisted ankles, corns, plantar fasciitis (painful swelling of the bottom of the feet) and blisters.
  • Certain diseases. Any disease that causes poor circulation, such as diabetes, can contribute to chronic pain.
  • Physical disabilities. Many inherited physical disabilities that affect the legs or feet, such as uneven gait, can cause pain in the feet.
  • Profession. Although more research needs to be done, preliminary studies indicate that those who work in a profession that requires standing for prolonged periods of time, such as waitresses and police officers, are more susceptible to pain in their feet.
  • Arthritis.
  • Hypertension. This condition can cause the feet to swell due to poor circulation and fluid buildup.
  • Age. The aged population is particularly susceptible to chronic pain in the feet. Over the years, the padding on the bottom of the feet thins out, causing the feet to flatten.

Preventing Foot Pain

The best way to alleviate foot pain, say experts, is by preventing the development. To that end, one should choose exercise programs very carefully to prevent high-impact foot injuries, change exercise shoes every 6 months (to prevent pain and injuries caused by the worn soles, or insoles, of shoes), and wear properly fitted shoes.

Diagnosing the Cause of Foot Pain

If the cause of the foot pain is not obvious, a visit to a doctor is recommended. Foot pain can signal serious medical conditions, such as diabetes, kidney malfunction or nerve damage, and should not be ignored.

Depending upon the type of foot pain, diagnosing its cause can involve several different tests.

- Physical/visual inspection. The physician will inspect the foot using both visual and physical methods. He or she may physically manipulate the foot to find the source of the pain. The physician may also ask you to walk or run so that your gait can be observed for probable foot malfunctions.
- Nerve test. Many causes of foot pain are due to foot injuries and, as such, nerve tests are extremely effective at pinpointing such injuries.
- X-rays. Depending on the type of pain, the physician may subject the foot to x-rays, MRIs, or bone scans to judge the integrity of the bones of the feet.

Treating Foot Pain

According to experts, any foot pain warrants immediate attention. Such attention, however, need not be medical-at least in the beginning. Indeed, there are a number of self-treatment options for chronic pain.

Self Treatment Options.

At the first sign of foot pain, experts recommend that you:

- Rest the foot to allow the healing process to begin.
- Apply ice to the affected foot (no more than 20 minutes at a time) to reduce swelling. Be sure to wrap the ice in a towel or a plastic bag before placing it on the skin.
- Elevate the foot to further reduce swelling.

When I was first introduced to EFT at the beginning of 2004, I was desperate to alleviate the intense and chronic pain I was experiencing as a result of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). In particular, pain in my knee joints, thighs and neck, as well as the evening headaches which verged on migraines. One of the many symptoms of the illness is acute muscular pain and there were days when the pain was immeasurable.

As I gained confidence in applying EFT on myself, I realized that simply stating I had “pain in my knees”, for example, as I tapped on the meridian points, was not sufficient to achieve long lasting relief. The pains would return after the initial relief, in a few hours, or a day.

As I became more confident in using EFT, I started describing the pain in detail: how the pain looked in my mind’s eye, the size and texture of it, the colour, how it felt and most importantly, how it made me feel. Then I used these answers when I applied EFT and found the results were permanent: the pain either reduced drastically or disappeared completely.

When I work with a client struggling with physical chronic pain, I use this same protocol. Aside from it building rapport with the client, I have learned that if I ask the right questions, the client gives the answers they need to heal the pain. Therefore, after asking the client to tune into the physical pain, I ask the following type of questions:

“What is the shape of this pain?” This results in answers such as, “it’s sharp and jagged”, “long and oval” or “a round ball with thin strings attached to it”.

“What colour is the pain?” If the client cannot see a colour, then I’ll ask them to imagine what the colour might be. Usually, the answers are very rich, dark colours such as crimson, purple or navy blue.

“What is the size of the pain?” I ask if it is smaller or larger than my fist, which guides the client to answering “the size of a tennis ball” or ” the width of my body”, for example.

“What does this pain feel like?” I encourage the client to describe the quality of the pain in real detail and answers might be “grinding”, “pounding”, “pulsing”, “like a knife digging in”, “a solid ball” or “as though it wants to escape”.

Once I have noted down their answers, we apply EFT, verbally stating the specifics of the pain in as much detail as possible.

When the client returns her awareness to the pain, and we go through the questions again, the pain has usually become smaller, lighter in colour and the quality has changed. This is indicative that the disruption in the body’s energy system is straightening out, the pain is clearing, and we can apply more rounds of EFT until the pain is reduced or eliminated.

If we cannot express feelings easily, they are swallowed and pushed deep down inside of us. They later manifest in the body as pain and illness, yet the negative emotions remain unresolved. After the client has described their pain in detail, I usually ask:

“Could there be an emotional reason for this pain?”

When working with a client suffering diabetic neuropathy pain in the sides of his hands and soles of his feet, I asked him this question. Without a second thought, he answered he was raging with anger towards various members of the medical profession.

He felt ignored and could no longer trust them. The emotional intensity was very high and after I had asked further questions, we were able to address the emotion, the symptoms and the belief with EFT. We used the following set-up phrase as we tapped:

“Even though I’m holding all this anger in my sides of my hands and the soles of my feet because the doctors won’t listen to me, I deeply and completely accept myself.”

After the intensity level of the anger had reduced considerably, we tapped specifically on the pain itself, then the various emotions, and then the specific reason for the emotions. After only one 90-minute session, my client reported that apart from feeling calmer and more centred, the pain had reduced noticeably. In a follow up telephone conversation three days later, he informed me that those specific chronic pains had disappeared. It was the first time he had experienced relief in his hands and feet since becoming ill.

It can be difficult for some people to accept that emotional issues can contribute to physical pain and illnesses. Some of my clients are unable to access their emotions or express how they feel. In this case, I ask them to imagine. For example,

“If there was an emotional reason for this pain, could you guess what it might be?”

In answering this, the client may not feel so pressurised to access how she is feeling and can usually come up with a very accurate answer. Simply asking when she was first aware of the pain is also a great way of obtaining insightful clues to the root cause of the pain.

It has been my experience that most illnesses and physical pains are triggered by some traumatic event, such as the death of a loved one, divorce, redundancy (getting fired), or moving house. Once I have established the emotions and belief systems which are attached to the memory, we can apply EFT and start to neutralize those unhelpful, negative feelings.

Another effective way of identifying the emotional driver behind the pain is to ask the client,

“If this pain had a voice what would it be saying to me now?”

Answers, such as “I am so lonely”, “I can’t forgive him” or “I need to be heard” are given and can be used in the next set-up statements and tapped on. If a client starts to cry as she describes her emotional or physical pain, I love to use the following metaphor,

“If these tears could talk, what would they be saying to me?”

Only recently, a client was telling me how she had coped as she watched her mother dying of a terminal disease. She started to cry and after an appropriate time, I asked her this question. She said the tears would say how sad they were for her father because he had struggled with how to show his emotions throughout her mother’s illness. Using this information, we applied EFT and quickly my client was able to feel calm and reassured. Her sadness was completely eliminated.

Using metaphor when working on chronic physical pain is not only a more creative way of applying EFT, but injects a level of gentleness into the process, enabling long lasting, effective pain relief.

Chronic pain is the major cause of disabilities and the most disabling of all aliments. Chronic pain happens over a long time and therefore affords an opportunity for learned behaviour.

Rehabilitation may not produce a cure but it stands to greatly improve one’s quality of life. There is a need to identify the elements in a client’s environment that reinforce pain behavior. Chronic pain people sometimes manipulate and control out of a compulsion to remain as pain patients. As practitioners, we cannot take away a client’s pain but we can help them to release their pain when that is what he or she decides to do.

The practitioner’s purpose is to challenge the client’s beliefs; to shake them if they are flimsy; and to make the client support or change them until their beliefs are shaken down to those in which they can show interest and enthusiasm.

It is always a good idea to ask oneself whether the client’s pain is a warning of disease, a bid for attention or sympathy, a signal of unhappiness or depression, or merely a characteristic way of reacting to other people. With discussion, conflicts don’t disappear, but with insight the client can choose to change their behaviour and/or their reactions.

Clients often resist change and cling to their pain. They have a fear of change and lack something constructive to replace the pain. Bear in mind that not all chronic pain sufferers are professional pain clients.

When all is said and done, pain is when there is a sensation of hurting. A simple statement for sure, but nonetheless it is the bottom line. For pain is not a simple cause and effect process. It is very individual and very varied. One’s psychic structure at any point in time can raise or lower the pain threshold. Philosophy, religion, sex and culture can affect the perception of pain. What one person feels as pain, another might not notice. Pain is the accepted name that is put on a sensation that is felt. For some, pain is not a primary sensation but rather a complex state of mind, holding emotionally charged feelings that would better be described as anguish, grief, distress, tension or anxiety. Pain is a signal that something is not right or a warning that requires a reaction.

Clearly pain cannot always be separated from emotion and emotion plays a major role in the perception of pain in some cases, increasing the pain and others blocking the pain.

Pain can be controlled in some situations by increasing large fiber output such as initiated by massage or tactile stimulation, which Polarity Therapy does for example. Pain can also be lessened by such means of specific training as behavioral conditioning and/or using the power of suggestion and distraction techniques. There is truth in the sayings “As we think – we are” and “Our body is a reflection of our thoughts.”

The multifaceted, multi disciplined approach works best with chronic pain. There are four basic steps in the successful management of pain:

1) have check-up by your doctor to determine cause and whether or not medical treatment is indicated.

2) doing the proper work up and getting a complete history

3) determining the trigger for the pain

4) using the best strategy, in the right amount, at the right time for the particular client’s aliment

People can build their world around pain and a behaviour pattern that victimizes family, friends and even medical personnel can develop. Their environment is what molds the direction their behaviour takes. When a sense of reward or satisfaction follows a given behaviour in their environment, then that behaviour is repeated. Unknowingly, the pain behaviour finds reinforcement within the environment. When the client engages in some behaviour identified by others to be indicative of pain, then this behaviour becomes known as pain behaviour. (e.g. favoring a sore leg)

When the chronically ill begin rehabilitation, major gaps in their well-behaviour repertoire are found. They have been out of touch with healthy actions for so long that they don’t know how to be well. It has to be relearned, reprogrammed with healthy patterns and actions re-established. This is what brings about well being.

The reason that chronic pain is so hard to alleviate is that the memory of pain tends to lower pain thresholds. This can result in a more intense response.

Drugs do not kill pain, they change people’s perception of it. They work in the brain itself interfering with the communication between the cortex (thinking cap) and the deeper thalamus. Actually, our psyche operates in pain perception perhaps even changing the way parts of our brain and nervous system respond to one another and send signals. Our bodies produce endorphins and these are our natural painkillers. It has been said that when pressure is applied to the head these endorphins are produced. There are theories that joggers enjoy jogging because it stimulates the brain to release endorphins. Endorphins are powerful antidotes to depression and lift one’s spirits. In the case of acupuncture and acupressure, endorphin release again occurs. These principles are also used in other disciplines such as Polarity Therapy.

Regularity in exercise is important to stimulate endorphin secretion. When starting to make regular exercise a part of one’s natural habit pattern it helps to remember that it takes about six weeks to develop a habit. Start gradually and work up to 1/2 – 3/4 hr. for three to five times per week. The best exercise is walking, swimming or jogging.

Dr. Stone the founder of Polarity Therapy said, “All pain is but an obstruction to energy flow.” Energy flow gets blocked when there is unexpressed emotion. Only when life’s currents are obstructed and become stagnant does fermentation of waste in the tissues cause decay and germs. Electromagnetic waves, their charge and cellular polarity are effected by depressed and repressed mental – emotional states. Even the cerebrospinal fluid becomes blocked when there is toxic waste build up. Through bodywork like Polarity and Cranial Sacral Therapy these blocks are removed as the energy currents are once again restored to free flowing. Remembering that force negates, and the supreme art is in the mastering of the art of “doing by – not doing” and to guide or facilitate the client’s return to the desired state of wellness and well -being.
