No, not even remotely in their job description nor their scope of practice. A medical transcriptionist goes to school to learn how to read specific medical documents and type them out from Dr’s recordings during surgeries and appointments. They have NO formal medical training whatsoever.
Ok in order to AVandel….. There is ALOT more to medical transcription that just knowing "How to type" and "a few medical terms" So unless you know something about that profession please reign in that vast knowledge base of yours until you do a little research on it.

AND medical transcriptionists do WAY more than just "read specific documents and listen you recordings". So please don’t belittle someone else profession.
No. Absolutely not. Whereas MTs are trained in all aspects of medical terminology, pharmacology, disease processes, anatomy, etc they do not have patient hands on contact and only a doctor can prescribe medication.
Medical transcriptionists need to know complex medical terminology, but under no circumstances do they handle medicines or patients. In fact, any patient contact at all is rare.
Perhaps you were thinking of a medical assistant. Under this older vague job heading, an employee might have patient contact, and also might do a bit of transcribing.

A medical transcriptionist does not need to know anything about medicines; they only need to know how to type, and some basic medical terminology.
